At least five people were killed by severe storms left by Tropical Storm Bonnie as it passed through Central America.
Four died in Nicaragua and one more in The Saviorreported authorities from both countries.
Bonnie, who has strengthened to winds of category 1 hurricane in Pacific waters, advance parallel to the southern coast of Mexico this week, causing severe storms in coastal regions.
“These rains might generate an increase in the levels of rivers and streams, landslides and floods in low-lying areas” of the states of Oaxaca and Guerreroreported the Mexican National Meteorological Service.
Bonnie made landfall Friday night on the Caribbean coast of southern Nicaragua and moved northwest across the country to the Pacific coast near El Salvador.
In the case of Nicaragua, the four deceased were swept away by rivers that swelled rapidly due to heavy rains.
One of the victims, Juan Carlos Alemán Mendoza, 43, was rescuing passengers from a local bus that had been swept away by the floods, local media reported.
Tens of thousands of people throughout Nicaragua were left without electricity and drinking water.
In El Salvador, authorities confirmed the death of a woman.
Parts of the country remain under alert for possible flooding. Schools remain closed throughout El Salvador on Monday, President Nayib Bukele announced on Twitter.
In the capital, San Salvador, several roads were destroyed and some cars were swept away by currents.
With her strength following passing through Central America, Bonnie is the third hurricane of the 2022 Pacific season nororientalfollowing Hurricane Agatha hit Mexico in May and Blas in June, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
Meteorologists wait a very active hurricane season this year.
This is because, for the second year in a row, weather patterns will be strongly influenced by a natural phenomenon known as The girl.
This is a natural weather pattern in the eastern Pacific that has implications for climate around the world. It refers to the changing trade winds and sea surface temperature in this region. While the El Niño phenomenon is warmer than average, La Niña is cooler than average or a neutral period.
This is why specialists suggest that there will be more named storms, more hurricanes and, in addition, larger than average hurricanes.
In 2021 the third most active season was recorded, and the previous year was the most active since there are records.
That year all the default names were exhausted and it was necessary to use the Greek alphabet to identify them.
