The court has rejected the petition filed by President Jair Bolsonaro seeking to nullify the election victory of Lula da Silva for the position of the President of Brazil. Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court also fined Bolsonaro’s coalition parties 22.9 lakh Brazilian riyals (Rs 35.12 crore). The penalty is for filing an unnecessary petition that harms the credibility of the election system.
The petition by Bolsonaro’s coalition alleged irregularities in the vote counting machine. In the second round of elections held on October 30, Lula da Silva, leader of the left-wing Workers’ Party, won 50.9 percent of the vote. Jair Bolsonaro, leader of the far-right Liberal Party, received 49.1 percent of the vote. Bolsonaro’s term as president ends on December 31. Lula da Silva will take over as president on January 1.
