Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) affirmed that the decision this Friday of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to leave him ineligible until 2030 for abuse of power and misuse of public media in the 2022 elections was a “ stabbed in the back.”

“Recently I received a stab in the belly and now they have stabbed me in the back with political disqualification for abuse of political power,” said the ultra-right leader in Brazil in an immediate reaction to the decision of the highest electoral authority and to the remember the attack he suffered in 2018, reported the EFE agency.

Jair Bolsonaro became this Friday the third former Brazilian president who is disqualified from disputing elective positions or holding public office, following being convicted in the electoral Court for abuses of power in the 2022 elections.

With that decision and failing to exhaust all resources, the 68-year-old far-right leader will not be able to contest any election for the next eight years.

The current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was also declared ineligible, but for a different reason.

The other disqualified former president was Fernando Collor (1990-1992), who during his tenure was accused of participating in a corrupt scheme, which triggered Congress to launch an impeachment trial once morest him.

In a context of serious economic crisis, Collor resigned in order to avoid being removed by Congress and maintain his political rights, but despite leaving the Presidency, the Senate approved his disqualification for eight years.

Lula’s party celebrates Bolsonaro’s sentence

Gleisi Hoffmann, president of the Workers’ Party (PT), led by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, considered this Friday the loss of political rights of former president Jair Bolsonaro as a condemnation of “the methods of the extreme right.”

For the president of the PT, it is a “great day”, a phrase that Bolsonaro used to celebrate his achievements, and shows that “the defense of democracy and the confrontation with fascism remain on the agenda” of Brazilian society, highlighted EFE.
