Located in a cave at an altitude of 3,888 meters at Amarnath in Jammu and Kashmir, about 141 km from the capital Srinagar, the Amarnath temple is closed to tourists for most of the year. Pilgrims are usually allowed from the day of Skandashashti in July to the day of Sravana Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) in August. Therefore, the best time to visit Amarnath is July – August. At other times the temperature is often below zero.
