Victory seems within reach for Bola Tinubu, the Progressive Congress (APC) candidate for the Nigerian presidential election. “The Godfather”, as he is nicknamed, won the most votes, according to official results.
Bola Tinubu, 70, who is seeking to succeed Muhammadu Buhari as head of Africa’s most populous country, won 8.8 million votes. He is ahead of his main rivals Atiku Abubakar of the PDP (6.9 million votes) and Peter Obi of the Labor Party (6.1 million votes), according to a state-by-state tabulation by AFP.
The National Electoral Commission (Inec) has yet to confirm that he obtains 25% of the votes in at least two thirds of the 36 states of the federation, as well as the territory of the capital Abuja, to be able to declare him winner at the end of one of the most contested elections in Nigeria’s democratic history.
