Bohemians 1905: A Comedy of Errors on the Pitch!

PragueOctober 20, 2024

Ah, it’s that magical time of year again when the Czech football league proves that you can indeed fit a pair of unpredictable teams onto a pitch and come away with a result that’s as confusing as your GPS when you set it to “avoid traffic.” This week, Bohemians 1905 went toe-to-toe with Mladá Boleslav, and the end result? A 2:2 draw that had all the drama of a soap opera—complete with missed penalties and questionable handballs!

Two Teams, One Fate: Drawn to Each Other

This was a match where we saw it all: heroic saves, fanatical celebrations, and of course, the classic “whoopsie daisy” moments that every football aficionado lives for. Lukáš Mašek opened the scoring for Boleslav in the 39th minute, proving once again that away goals feel like trophies to any visiting player. But not to be outdone, Vladimír Zeman equalized for the Bohemians after the break, because why let a stranger have all the fun, right?

Now, let’s skip to the drama—because who doesn’t love a good penalty shootout? Patrik Vydra calmly converted a penalty for Boleslav. But then came the twist! In a scene straight out of a slapstick comedy, Júsuf Hilál stepped up for the Bohemians, only to sky the original attempt into the stratosphere, only to redeem himself on the second attempt. Perhaps he was trying to send a message to the goal post? “I’ll be back!”

The Wild Ending

The final moments of the match were a whirlwind of confusion. Referee Szikszay, after consulting with the elusive VAR—who I’m convinced is just a man with an on/off switch—ordered a penalty kick after a handball that left everyone scratching their heads. One can only imagine the conversation in the VAR room: “So, do we give it or what? Let’s just see how this plays out…”

Bohemians, who haven’t lost at home to Mladá Boleslav in eight games, know how to draw as if it were an Olympic sport. But with both teams sitting on 13 points as they eye each other from the middle of the league table, let’s hope their next game isn’t yet another “who can trip over their own shoelaces the best” competition.

What’s Next?

Central Bohemia prepares to host Lugano for the second game of the Conference League on Thursday, though the chances of scoring from the draw? Astronomical. They haven’t seen a win in six competitive matches. So, while both teams evidently possess enough penchants for drawing equal score lines—as if they’re auditioning for “Dancing with the Stars”—let’s hope they find their scoring boots and learn how to finish!

Central Bohemia will host Lugano in the second game of the Conference League on Thursday. They are already waiting for a win in six competitive matches, the last time they won almost two months ago. However, Vršovič is not much better off either, having won only one of the last six rounds. Both teams have the same 13 points, Boleslav is ninth, Bohemians are a rung behind it.

“Kangaroos” started with an onslaught and already had their first chance in the third minute. Pleštil decided to finish from a wide angle and his shot was deflected onto the post by goalkeeper Trmal. Another opportunity arose after Kadlec’s cross from the right side, Drchal directed the ball in front of the goal with his head, where he also headed it under the crossbar again. Pleštil and Trmal scrambled the ball with effort to the corner.

After a while, the home team’s pressure dropped, they didn’t get as much space as at the beginning of the game, and the game was played only from the 16 to the 16. The visitors hit the goal with the first shot before the break.

Kušej found the onrushing Mašek with a precise ground cross from the left side, who in a slip routed the ball past goalkeeper Frühwald. Mašek scored in the league for the third time in the autumn, Kušej recorded the goal for the fifth time, so he currently has the most assists in the competition.

The second half

Coach Veselý made three changes in the line-up at the break, 10 minutes after the half he made a fourth substitution, but it was only a quick break in the 65th minute that led to improvement. Vršovičti equalized thanks to a very similar action, after which they cashed in. Drchal addressed a precise cross in front of the goal from the right side, where substitute Zeman prevailed with his second league goal of the year and of his career at the same time.

The ending was wild. First, there was a confusing situation in the home penalty area. It was a question of whether Pulkrab, who was visiting earlier, or Hybš from Vršovice played with his hand. Referee Szikszay, after consulting with the video referee and analyzing on the monitor, ordered a penalty, which Vydra converted. The Sparta pupil scored the first goal in the league in a Boleslav jersey.

However, Kostka also played with his hand in the setup on the other side. Trmal first kicked Hilál’s penalty kick, but the former Mladá Boleslav player then sent the ball into the net on the second attempt. Hilál scored for the fifth time in the fall.

Bohemians have not lost eight times in a row at home in the league with Mlada Boleslaví, three of the last four matches in Ďolíček ended in a draw.
