Boeing expands ecoDemonstrator program in 2023

2023-04-30 07:00:00

Boeing announced its program ecoDemonstrator 2023 in which 19 technologies will be evaluated on a 777, as well as the addition of “Explorer” aircraft whose mission will be to test certain innovations in areas of sustainable development and security.

The first “Explorer” aircraft, a 787-10 Dreamliner, will conduct flight tests in June from Seattle to Tokyo, Singapore and Bangkok to demonstrate how the coordination of navigation in international airspace can improve operational efficiency, reducing fuel burn and emissions by up to 10% per aircraft. Using the onboard capabilities currently available, Boeing and Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) operating in the United States, Japan, Singapore and Thailand will collectively calculate the aircraft’s route scheduling to to define the optimal flight path between several regions taking into account parameters such as weather conditions, air traffic and the closure of certain airspaces. The aircraft will use the blend with the highest rate of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) available at each site.

In 2023, Boeing will also use the current flagship aircraft of its ecoDemonstrator program, an extended-range 777-200ER, to test 19 technologies, including:
-Sustainable wall partitions in the hold made of 40% recycled carbon fibers and 60% resins from a biosourced raw material;
-A fiber optic level sensor compatible with 100% sustainable fuels;
-An Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) application featuring Smart Airport Maps, a module of the Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro application that reduces operating costs and promotes taxi safety by representing contextual airport data.
– For all flight tests, the aircraft will use the mixture with the highest sustainable fuel rate available locally.

Since its first flights in 2012, the Boeing ecoDemonstrator program has helped accelerate innovation by testing laboratory-developed technologies in an operational environment. Including the 2023 plan, this program will have tested around 250 technologies to help decarbonize aviation, improve operational efficiency and strengthen aviation safety while improving the passenger flight experience. About a third of the technologies tested in this program have subsequently been incorporated into Boeing products and services.
