On January 5, 2024, the depressurization door of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX departing from Portland (United States) was torn off in mid-flight while the plane was at an altitude of 4,800 meters. Although the incident did not cause any casualties, the FAA (American federal aviation agency) opened an investigation, the conclusions of which, delivered Monday March 4highlight multiple failures in the manufacturing process, reports The Tribune .

“Non-compliance with the industrial process”

It was shortly following the incident that the FAA opened its audit of Boeing and its supplier Spirit AeroSystems. According to the report which has just been issued, several breaches of security requirements were noted. Notably “non-compliance issues in Boeing’s industrial process control, parts management and storage, and product control”.

Furthermore, a survey made it possible to identify “that four bolts intended to prevent the cork holder from moving upwards were missing before it moved”.

Passengers demand a billion dollars

The FAA gives Boeing and its supplier 90 days to respond to the audit. The aircraft manufacturer also sees itself obliged to slow down the increase in production of its 737 MAX. On February 27, Dave Calhoun, CEO of the company, declared: “Thanks to the safety awareness days, the findings of the FAA audit and the recent expert report, we have a clear vision of what needs to be done”. An action plan is already being developed.

Furthermore, three passengers recently filed a complaint for negligence once morest the manufacturer and the airline, citing in particular ear bleeding linked to the sudden depressurization of the device. “As a direct result of the horrific and life-threatening failure of the Boeing aircraft, all three passengers suffered serious mental, emotional and psychological injuries, including post-traumatic stress, as well as physical injuries”indicates the complaint relayed by The Parisian . The plaintiffs are seeking $1 billion in compensation.
