Multiple questions after the shipwreck

The sinking has baffled naval experts who say a ship like the Bayesian.

Built by Italian high-end yacht builder Perini, it should have weathered the storm and, in any case, should not have sunk as quickly as it did.

The town of Porticello and its waters were hit by a fierce storm before dawn on Monday, August 19, when the tragedy occurred.

According to the authorities’ main hypotheses, this would be the reason for the sinking, specifically, the sudden entry of a large amount of water into the boat would have caused it to sink quickly.

Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was hit by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, causing it to sink rapidly.

The main question that researchers are focusing on is how a sailboat considered “insumergible” by its manufacturer, the Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat was virtually unharmed.

And 15 people managed to survive thanks to the captain of the boat that was next to the luxury boat.

The sailor was struggling to steady his own boat when he turned around and saw that the yacht had disappeared, after which he provided first aid to several seriously injured people and a one-year-old baby, whom he rescued and safely transported to dry land.

Investigators from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Termini Imerese announced that they will hold a press conference on Saturday, August 24, to reveal the first findings of their criminal investigation, which was opened immediately after the tragedy.
