HEAD of Public Relations and Media of PP PBSI Broto Happy Wondomisnowo said the body of Chinese men’s singles badminton player Zhang Zhi Jie is still at the dr. Sardjito Hospital in Yogyakarta.

“Until now, Zhang’s body is still at Sardjito Hospital. The family is still asking for another week,” said Broto, Thursday (18/7).

Regarding the reason why Zhang’s body has not been returned to China even though it has been two weeks since he died, Broto said his party still does not know the details.

“As for why, we don’t know. The family asked for another week,” said Broto.

Zhang died following collapsing on the court during the 2024 Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC) on June 30.

At that time, Zhang was playing once morest Kazuma Kawamo (Japan) in the Group D preliminary round at GOR Amongrogo, Yogyakarta. He was declared dead on Sunday (30/6) at 23.20 WIB.

Furthermore, on Friday (5/7), the organizers of BAJC 2024, including Badminton Asia, PP PBSI, and the organizing committee, had held an audience and provided assistance regarding the follow-up process for the incident together with Zhang’s family and the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA).

“In this audience, the family and CBA can listen to statements from the tournament doctor, the doctor from RSPAU dr. Suhardi Hardjolukito as the referral hospital and RSUP dr. Sardjito. In addition, the family and CBA are also given the opportunity to ask questions to get a complete picture of the incident,” explained PP PBSI in an official statement, Sunday (7/7).

“The hearing went well and Zhang Zhi Jie’s family expressed their gratitude for what the organizing committee showed. We are also ready to fully support the fulfillment of letters or supporting documents needed by the family until the process of repatriating the body. However, until today, we still have not received a decision from Zhang Zhi Jie’s family for the next steps,” PBSI continued. (Ant/Z-1)
