In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine, actress Megan Fox claimed to be a victim of body dysmorphia. Although she has been voted by several publications as one of the most attractive women in the world, she has stated that she has never felt beautiful.

The interview is accompanied by a series of images in which the star appears in a bikini on a beach in the Dominican Republic. “I don’t see myself as people see me. I never felt like a beautiful woman in my life, not even when I was a child. Dissatisfaction with my body has always been an obsession with me.”

According to experts, body dysmorphia has nothing to do with the person’s real appearance, but precisely with the way they perceive themselves. “Body dysmorphia is not just dissatisfaction, it is a distorted view of what one’s own body is like”, says psychologist Jennifer Patricia Kuhn Lago, from Brasília.

What is body dysmorphia?

The technical name for the problem is Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). The person finds defects in his body and cannot stop thinking regarding them, feeling very bad when he sees himself in the mirror.

Symptoms of body dysmorphia are especially linked to a very judicious and distorted judgment of one’s own appearance, such as:

  • Active search for finding defects in one’s own body;
  • Anguish with one’s own appearance that impairs even the individual’s functional capacity;
  • Inability to stop looking in the mirror, even if you don’t admire what the object reflects;
  • Using extremely harsh adjectives to describe oneself as deformed, hideous or monstrous.

“Our vision does not allow us to see our body in an integrated way. We become aware of what we are and how this is evaluated as our social interactions occur. As we live in a society that devalues people outside of a beauty standard, we set imaginary goals for our appearance from an early age”, says the psychologist.

Megan Fox stated in the interview that her personal journey to learn to love herself will be a lifetime task.

Body dysmorphia is treated with psychotherapy sessions and, in addition, it may be necessary to take antidepressants and anxiolytics.
