The bodies of eight injured migrants from China were found on a beach in southern Mexico. The seven women and one man had an accident on a boat that set off from Tapachula on the border with Guatemala on Thursday, the public prosecutor’s office said on Saturday. On Friday, their bodies were discovered on a beach in the city of San Francisco del Mar.
The public prosecutor’s office initially stated that the dead were migrants from Asia. On Saturday she then identified the victims as Chinese. Another migrant reportedly survived the accident. The whereregardings of a Mexican who was piloting the boat is unclear.
The bodies were found east of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, through which one of the refugee routes runs through Mexico to the USA.
Every year, thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries cross Mexico toward the U.S. border. Most migrants come from Central American countries. According to official information, people from China, India, Uzbekistan and other distant countries were also arrested in Mexico last year.
