The boat driver had reported to the main rescue center the night before that he had hit something, without knowing what it was, the police said.
– Yesterday, the boat driver read on social media that a jet ski had been found with damage and therefore reported it again. A search was then launched, says police attorney Øyvind Bore in the Sørvest police district in a press release.
He says it is too early to say anything about the course of events.
– It is also too early to say anything about the cause of the accident, but what I can say is that the police have received information that a boat driver reported to the police and the Central Rescue Service (HRS) last night that he probably had hit something in the sea, without the reporting party knowing what it was, says Bore.
The boat driver, a man in his 30s, has been charged as the boat and his mobile phone have been seized. He was questioned on Sunday. What came out during the interrogation, the police will not say anything about for the time being.
Just before 1pm on Sunday, the police received a report, via HRS, about wreckage from a jet ski in the Hidlefjord south of Rennesøy. After an hour and a half of searching, two young men were found dead in the sea.
Both have been identified, and next of kin have been notified. Both were students at two different upper secondary schools in Nord-Jæren – Hetland and Randaberg – the principals at the two schools have confirmed to Stavanger Aftenblad.
The two dead teenagers will be autopsied, the police say.
