Anachrony

Author: Dávid Turczi, Richard Amann, Viktor Peter ◾ Graphics: Villő Farkas, László Fejes, Laslo Forgach, Márton Gyula Kiss, Péter Meszlényi ◾ Number: 2-4 ◾ Dauer: 90-120 ◾ Alter: 15

An epic expert game.

It’s the 26th century. Earth is recovering from a catastrophic explosion that wiped out the majority of the population and left most of the surface uninhabitable. The survivors have organized themselves into four radically different ideologies: Harmony, Dominance, Progress and Redemption. These so-called Paths live isolated from each other in the shelter of their capitals, in fragile but lasting peace.

Anarchony is played over seven ages (= rounds), which are divided into different phases. Through these phases we can ask for resources and manpower from the future thanks to time travel, but as the game progresses we also have to send them to the past in order not to risk a paradox.

The game ends with the evaluation of victory points after the world capital is destroyed by the asteroid impact. Victory points are earned in a variety of ways, most notably by building buildings and super projects, making scientific breakthroughs, using time travel, achieving high morale, and evacuating the collapsing capital.

Arborea

Author: Dani Garcia ◾ Graphics: Javier González Cava, Nicolas Gendron◾ Number: 1-5 ◾ Duration: 90-120◾ Age: 14

We immerse ourselves in a very colorful world.

Welcome to the world of Arborea. You are a guardian spirit and guide your villagers to care for and grow the landscape around them by sending them on pilgrimages and building your personal ecosystem.

In the worker placement game we place our villagers on action tracks (“pilgrimage”). These ledges can then be advanced and take all villagers with them. The further the action bars are moved, the better the rewards players receive when their villagers are activated.

These rewards can help players contribute to the common resource bar, bring offerings to the great and wise saints to invest in future gifts, or attract animals to the land of Arborea.

Use the shared resources to build the individual ecosystem by overlaying terrain cards to create habitats and by placing animals to gain victory points at the end of the game.

The end of the game is signaled via a sun bar.

Hot off the press

Author: Peter McPherson◾ Graphics: Ian O’Toole◾ Number: 1-6 ◾ Duration: 15-30◾ Age: 10

Disteldorf is the busiest little village in the world: It’s not easy to stay up to date with the latest news, but as editor of one of the local newspapers, it’s your job to tell the villagers’ stories!

The front page is due in a few hours and you don’t have time for perfection! Grab the interesting articles before the others and take some good photos too. Your work costs money, so you need income – so be sure to think about advertising too!

Everyone gets their newspaper tray and a desk. The newspaper tiles are distributed centrally. Depending on their experience, the players agree on a time limit of between 3 and 5 minutes.

We play over three days (=rounds). The tableaus get bigger and bigger depending on the day of the week.

Then we can start and we grab tiles from the middle with one hand and place them on the desk. We individually start the second phase, in which we then arrange the tiles on our newspaper. Certain investment rules apply to articles (from three categories), photos and advertisements.

After each round, the newspaper is scored.

In the advanced area, character cards with individual skills can also be added.

Vegetable cubes

Author: Josh Cappel, Jory Cappel, Rowan Cappel ◾ Graphics: Claire Lin◾ Number: 2-4 ◾ Duration: 30-45◾ Age: 6

Chop the best ingredients, cook delicious dishes from all over the world and refine them with secret additives to win the most stars in the end.

The dice (= ingredients) are rolled and arranged in a 7×5 grid (frame is included).

Then the recipes are prepared and three are laid out face up. Each turn consists of three phases:

  • Cutting dice with a maximum number of 10
  • Cooking recipes (several possible, optional). At this point you can play additional cards with abilities and bonuses.
  • Draw an additional card or a recipe (display or stack)

If the dice are no longer enough, you can get more from the discarded dice. The game ends once the sixth recipe has been cooked.

Loot

Author: Ralf zur Linde, Roy zur Linde◾ Graphics: Christian Operer, Michael Menzel ◾ Number: 1-4 ◾ Duration: ◾ Age: 12

The official game for SPIEL 2024 is a Roll n Write game.

In LOOT You use dice to move back and forth across the Spiel exhibition grounds in Essen and visit the most interesting exhibition stands. The winner is whoever of you has explored the fair best in this way.

We play in parallel with three dice that apply to everyone. One of them is the active cube, which we use to move forward horizontally or vertically on the exhibition grounds. The other dice show how far we can move on the next move and the move after that. Fields are first marked with a line and the second time with a cross (fields marked with a cross may not be visited again). The active die is then rolled again and is placed at the end of the order.

If I have visited a complete exhibition stand (colors), depending on the size there are point bonuses or additional abilities (move beyond the edge or move +/- 1 field). There are also victory points for columns and rows.

The points won are added up on the bar. When someone reaches the third-to-last space, the game ends.

Pampero

Author: Julián Pombo◾ Graphics: Ian O’Toole◾ Number: 1-4 ◾ Duration: 60-150 ◾ Age: 12

Due to a lack of natural resources and to avoid being highly dependent on energy imports from neighboring countries, the Uruguayan government has created incentives to improve domestic electricity production and distribution.

The first priority is to expand electricity networks in rural areas, which make up most of the country. After that, improving the electricity supply in general is on the agenda – both in large cities and in remote areas.

Fortunately, the strong winter wind Pampero blows over Uruguay, making the country an ideal place for electricity generation from wind turbines. Some of the rural areas could even supplement their electricity supply with solar energy.

You must expand your power grid and meet the energy needs of the entire country to dominate the most profitable company!

After extensive setup of the game, we get started and we build the power grid in Uruguay.

The game is played over a variable number of rounds. These consist of four phases:

  • Action phase: We play action cards into our display and can carry out actions in certain sectors accordingly. In total, we take turns playing out three actions (power grid, building a wind farm, moving bulldozers, fulfilling contracts, etc.). What’s exciting here is, among other things, our own network board, which we have to use to unlock further action options.
  • Consolidation phase: clean up and produce batteries and receive income.
  • Turn order phase is redetermined.
  • and if necessary. a scoring phase depending on the discs on the bar. There are two intermediate and one final rankings.

Off to the raft

Author: Frank West ◾ Graphics: Miguel Da Silva and Frank West◾ Number: 1-4 ◾ Duration: ◾ Age: 12

Cooperative tile laying game from the Isle of Cats universe.

The Island of Cats is in flames because Vesh Direhand’s henchmen are still up to mischief on it. Many cats have already been brought to safety in a large rescue operation, but some remained behind. Apparently there is a raft moored down on the beach that the cats could use to escape. Now it’s time to get on the raft!

After we have laid out the island plan (there are different scenarios) we can get started. Everyone draws three path cards. There are four decks with different cards. We can discuss beforehand who should draw how many cards from which deck. There is no fixed order when playing. On your turn you can either move a cat or lay out a path. In the former, a card is discarded and a cat can move across the fields according to its color (the cat is then exhausted).

The goal is now to get all the cats onto the raft. If this is no longer possible with our cards, we will lose the game.

There are different levels of difficulty.
