BMW M Motorsport Adds Formula 1 Veteran Kevin Magnussen to 2025 LMDh Lineup
Munich.
Kevin Magnussen, a seasoned Formula 1 driver with 185 Grand Prix starts to his name, is set to join BMW M Motorsport for the 2025 season.
The 32-year-old Dane will become a BMW M works driver, piloting the formidable BMW M Hybrid V8 in both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC), which includes the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.
A Proven Pedigree
Magnussen’s racing resume boasts notable achievements.
He clinched the Formula Renault 3.5 title in 2013 and made an immediate impact upon entering Formula 1 the following year, securing a second-place podium finish in his debut race. Magnussen’s best championship placing came in 2018 when he finished ninth in the driver standings.
Beyond Formula 1, Magnussen has tested his skills in endurance racing. He competed in a full season of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2021, driving a prototype in the top-class DPi category, where he achieved one victory and five podium finishes. That same year, he also tackled the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans in an LMP2 car.
Looking Ahead
“Kevin Magnussen is an outstanding addition to our LMDh program,” said Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport. “He has consistently demonstrated his speed at the highest level in Formula 1 for the past decade. Thanks to his extensive experience, he is a valuable asset to our project. His previous full season with a sports car prototype in 2021 is another advantage, as it will certainly ease his acclimatization to the BMW M Hybrid V8. I am delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen to the BMW M Motorsport family.”
“I am happy and proud to represent such an iconic motorsport brand as BMW in some of the most legendary races on the planet,” stated Magnussen. “After ten years in Formula 1, I am embarking on a new and exciting chapter. I look forward to the challenge of racing in the most innovative and advanced sports cars in the history of endurance racing. My greatest thanks to BMW M Motorsport for this fantastic opportunity. I can hardly wait to start preparations for the 2025 season with the rest of the team.”
The full driver lineup for both the IMSA series and the FIA WEC will be announced at a later date by BMW M Motorsport.
