BMW is recalling more than 14,000 units of its iX, i4 and i7 electric vehicles.
The recall targets high-voltage battery electronic control unit (ECU) software in cars, which might cause a sudden loss of power.
The problem is specifically related to the thermal management software. That loss of power can occur while the car is moving and that can increase the risk of a crash.
BMW filed the recall report with NHTSA on December 20, 2022, which means that NHTSA did not force BMW to make the recall. Instead, BMW acknowledged the problem and requested the recall.
According to the report, the recall resolution is simple. Owners of the i4, iX and the relatively new i7 will receive a recall notice if their car is affected on or following February 10, 2023.
They will simply have to take their car to a BMW dealer, where the ECU software will be updated free of charge.
The report does not give specific build dates for the models involved, instead saying only that as many as 14,086 models might have the problem.
While the i7 only exists for the 2023 model year, the 2022 and 2023 i4 and iX models are included in the recall.
All of its associated trimmings might also be part of the recall, as each version of each model was listed in NHTSA documentation.
