BMW Dejonckheere Delivers State-of-the-Art Service Vehicle to CHWapi SMUR: A Game-Changer for Emergency Medical Teams

This Thursday morning, the CHWapi SMUR teams of doctors and nurses were all smiles. They were invited to the BMW Dejonckheere dealership on the chaussée de Bruxelles in Tournai to receive the keys to their brand new service vehicle.

It had been in the making for 18 months. The teams involved in the mobile emergency and resuscitation service worked hand in hand to imagine a work tool that meets their needs. Through the field experiences of each other, the emergency physicians determined the improvements that needed to be made to the previous model. “Our priorities were a more suitable loading of equipment for better efficiency in the field; a higher vehicle to be more visible in traffic; but also more powerful for sharp accelerations; and safer “, says Vincent Loncke, head nurse of the emergency-SMUR unit.

State-of-the-art technology

That’s why the largest SUV in BMW’s range was chosen to fulfill these functions. This car has six cylinders, 350 horsepower – the old vehicle had 190 – and can reproduce a reverse gear (automatically) for the last 50 meters made, “a real plus in the small dead ends of Tournai “, comments the dealer. This SUV had to be equipped with LED lights to signal its presence in the distance. They are found on the roof railing, but also on the mirrors and the plate. Finally, BMW has integrated a very powerful electronic siren to compensate for the classic.

The little extra and not the least is the SDS to GPS which will allow via an electronic message to send directly in the GPS of the car, the exact address where the nurses will have to go.

A safe designed for efficiency

In addition to state-of-the-art technology, what excites emergency physicians the most is the safe. This has been specially designed for them with a mobile drawer where the equipment they need is installed in priority order. “First of all, we wanted to group our tools in backpacks and no longer in suitcases to carry them more easily. In the car, we placed the doctor’s equipment on the right in the trunk, and that of the nurse on the left, according to our reflexes when exiting the vehicle (the doctor generally does not drive). The compartments are arranged at our height, unlike our current vehicle where we have to bend down and sometimes lift heavy suitcases. In this chest, there is also a work plan where we can put our equipment as we see fit.“, explains Vincent Loncke.

CHWapi management has informed its SMUR-emergency team that a second similar vehicle has been ordered and will arrive by next year.
