THE Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has asked the public to be aware of forest and land fires (karhutla). BMKG forecaster Rif’at Darajat said there is potential for a level of flammability in the upper layers of the soil surface in the highly flammable category in several areas.

“In parts of Central Sumatra, parts of southern Sumatra. Most of Java, a small part of Bali, and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), a small part of Kalimantan, parts of South Sulawesi and a small part of southern Papua,” he explained as broadcast by the BMKG YouTube channel, quoted Monday (23/9).

BMKG appealed to those in these areas to be careful when burning trash or land and not to throw cigarette butts anywhere to avoid forest and land fires.

Rif’at also said that surface winds in Indonesia are generally dominated by the East to Southeast with speeds ranging from 5-40 kilometers (km) per hour. Air temperatures range from 15 to 35 degrees Celsius.

For the estimate of high sea surface waves in the Indonesian region, Rif’at said it generally ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 meters. Then there is an increase in wind speed to more than 25 knots monitored in the Andaman Sea which is able to increase the height of waves in the waters. (H-3)
