BMCI organizes the 1st edition of the Sustainable Finance Forum

With the aim of promoting sustainable finance, BMCI is organizing the Sustainable Finance Forum in its first edition in Morocco, on Wednesday June 15, 2022, in Rabat. The Deputy Head of BNP Paribas International Retail Banking and Head of Europe-Mediterranean, François Benaroya, as well as the Chairman of the Management Board of BMCI, Philippe Dumel, invite on this occasion several important Moroccan economic players, involved in the sectors of energy transition, health , female and positive impact entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, to discuss their vision of sustainable and responsible growth.

Today, more than ever, the world is confronted with major environmental and social challenges, particularly linked to climate change, the consequences of which can be disastrous in the absence of clear, concrete and sufficient action. In addition, Morocco also faces various challenges related to education, health, water… Aware of these issues, Morocco is committed to the global effort to implement the requirements of the Agreement. of Paris and the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. Several local initiatives and strategic plans can be cited such as the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (SNDD), the National Climate Plan 2030 (PCN) or the New Model of development.

In this respect, the financial sector is in a position to play an important role for a more environmentally friendly and more inclusive economy, through the orientation given to its financing and through the design of solutions and investment products reconciling impact and performance to foster a more sustainable and inclusive economy. The financial sector plays a crucial role through sustainable finance allowing an ecological transition of customers and the transition to a fairer model.

As such, the BNP Paribas Group aims to be a leader in sustainable finance, supported by the conviction that no one really wins in a losing world. The Group is committed to aligning the greenhouse gas emissions induced by its credit activities with the trajectory required to finance a carbon-neutral world in 2050. In the same vein, BMCI places sustainable finance at the heart of its strategic plan 2022 – 2025 and has defined 3 priority areas of intervention: Energy Transition, Positive Impact Entrepreneurship and Financial Inclusion. In addition, BMCI supports its clients in the adoption of best Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices through the implementation of sectoral policies which set rules for intervention in certain sensitive sectors. These policies include environmental and social criteria for financing and investment decisions in sectors with high stakes: deforestation, water management, CO2 emissions, waste management.

To achieve these ambitions, BMCI implements a number of essential conditions, in line with the strong will of the BNP Paribas Group in this area:

  •  The establishment of dedicated governance with the creation of the Commitment Department, which oversees the development of our social and environmental responsibility and steers the activities of the BMCI Foundation;
  •  The definition of objectives in terms of direct impacts linked to the proper functioning of the bank (Greenhouse Gas emissions linked to our buildings and travel, consumption of electricity, water, paper and recycling of waste ) but also indirect impacts via our financing portfolio (Commitments and NBI linked to “green” credits,
  •  Training and raising awareness of our employees via an internal training program on social and environmental issues and sustainable finance;
  •  A constant dialogue with all of its stakeholders to best respond to their priorities.

    The Sustainable Finance Forum aspires to become an annual meeting that will satisfy the desire expressed by Bank Al-Maghrib to establish a stable sustainable finance system in the Moroccan market, but also the new and strong need for support expressed by the citizen.

    The Sustainable Finance Forum provides for a selection of speakers and moderators, made up of professionals from different sectors of activity and different backgrounds, in order to share their experience and their achievements in terms of Sustainable Finance, through 3 main panels:

  • – ESG financing: Expectations and challenges for Morocco.
  • – Financing health, what issues and what solutions?
