[메디컬투데이=이승재 기자] Blueberries have been shown to be effective in preventing cardiovascular disease.
The results of a study on the preventive effect of blueberries on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases were published in the ‘American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’.
Recently, blueberries are attracting attention as one of the ‘super foods’ that are good for health.
The research team analyzed the effects of blueberries on the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease from various angles for 12 weeks in 61 adults.
Half of the participants consumed 26 grams of dried blueberry powder as a drink daily, while the other half consumed a beverage that looked, tasted, and had the same fiber and vitamin C content. 26 grams of blueberries is equivalent to 75-80 blueberries.
As a result of the study, people who consumed blueberries daily had an average reduction of 3.59 mmHg in systolic blood pressure.
The research team said that the decrease in systolic blood pressure was a significant result, as hypertension is an important risk factor for the development of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
In addition, those who consumed blueberries had improved blood vessel function compared to those who did not consume blueberries. In terms of cerebral function, those who consumed blueberries had a faster ability to remember words or convert thoughts.
However, compared to those who did not consume blueberries, there was no difference in the state of arteriosclerosis in cerebral arteries or blood lipid levels in those who consumed blueberries.
The research team explained that blueberries contain a blue pigment called anthocyanin, and that the effect of anthocyanin improves blood vessel function.
They concluded that blueberries are effective in preventing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease.
