California: NASA contract for world billionaire Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin. As part of NASA’s Artemis mission, the company has been awarded a contract to build the Lunar Lantern to land astronauts on the moon in 2029. NASA made this announcement last day. Blue Origin was awarded a $340 crore (Rs 28,165 crore) contract for the design, manufacture, testing, etc. of the Lunar Lantern.

Blue Origin plans to build a 52-foot-tall Blue Moon lander in partnership with Lockheed Martin, Boeing and spacecraft software company Astrobotic. NASA mission chief Jim Free said that Blue Origin has received a contract worth around Rs 28,165 crore. Jeff Bezos responded that he is proud to be a part of this mission. Earlier, NASA had signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX company

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said that having a second lunar probe for the Artemis mission would encourage commercial competition. He added that it is hoped that the cost of NASA will be reduced in the coming years.

The design of the lantern will be suitable for human exploration of the moon. It should be able to land on the lunar surface and connect with the Gateway space station that NASA plans to place in lunar orbit. The contract also includes unmanned testing of the lantern, which will be manufactured by Blue Origin, before humans travel on it.

Four astronauts will go to the moon as part of the Artemis 5 mission. The launch will be on NASA’s Space Launch System rocket. Astronauts travel in the Orion spacecraft. A gateway placed in lunar orbit will connect the Orion spacecraft to the space station and passengers will transfer to the space station. Two of the four passengers will then transfer to the Blue Origin-built landing system and land on the Moon’s South Pole.

The Lunar Lantern contract for the Artemis 3 mission has been awarded to SpaceX. SpaceX earned 24,850 crores for this lunar mission. The mission is expected to come to fruition by 2025. With the new contract, Blue Origin becomes the second private company to get a chance to launch a space mission with the help of NASA.

Astronauts are set to land on the moon for the first time since the Apollo missions in 1972.
