Blue light blocking glasses would be useless

You may wear blue-light blocking glasses to improve your sleep and reduce the effects of screens on your eyesight. Well know that it is useless… for nothing! At least, according to a study from the University of Melbourne.

Many opticians and eyewear brands offer their customers yellow-tinted lenses, which are supposed to block blue light, which is accused of causing visual health concerns and interfering with sleep.

And yet, according to a study carried out by a team from the University of Melbourne on a panel of 619 participants, glasses with filters supposed to limit the negative impact of this type of light are more than ineffective. They did not notice any difference or improvement in sleep or vision, as CNN reports.

So certainly, a single study involving 619 participants would not be enough, on its own, to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of blue light filters. But this is not the only study carried out in this direction. The website Lemon Squeezerfor example, recalls the case of Gunnar, a famous brand of glasses whose ineffectiveness had been proven in a study by the University of the South Pacific.

What makes this new study unique, however, is that it is probably the largest to date in the field and that it seems to drive another major nail into the coffin of the glasses myth. blue light blocker. But then, how to explain it?

First of all, it must be agreed that glasses filtering blue light only block an extremely negligible part of it, around ten or twenty percent. So needless to say, if it’s really blue light that’s the problem, then these glasses let 90% of the problem reach the eyes. We have known better as protection…

But above all, perhaps we have somewhat overestimated the danger of blue light. Thus, Dr. Craig See, corneal specialist, interviewed by CNN, explains that for most people, the problems of eye fatigue felt have little to do with this type of light.

In fact, the cause is much more obvious: spending too much time in front of a screen without interruption, which is called CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome). This concern, which causes problems with dry eyes, sensitivity to light or even concentration, is rarely serious and resolves itself by not using devices such as computers or smartphones.

But for those who work non-stop in front of a screen, all hope is not lost either. Far from it… Surely you have already heard the advice telling you to look away for regarding twenty seconds? Well, it is relevant. Unfortunately, most computer users very quickly end up forgetting this eye hygiene, and not doing it regularly.

It is also important to take breaks every hour, and not to stand too close to your screen (the distance of your arm between you and your screen should be sufficient).

An open space office environment is not always ideal for maintaining these good habits, especially when you know that you are being watched by your superior or that space may be lacking. But still, forcing yourself to adopt healthy behaviors is essential if you don’t want to feel bad at the end of the day.

So there’s no need to pay extra to your optician for an ineffective (but perfectly harmless) filter, when the best way to solve the problem is probably to adopt good habits…
