The ‘blue legs symptom’, in which legs turn blue when standing for more than 10 minutes, has been discovered as one of the new long-term coronavirus sequelae.
Dr. Mano Sivan of the University of Leeds, UK, announced in the medical journal The Lancet on the 11th that he had recently discovered a 33-year-old male patient complaining of these symptoms. This patient came to the hospital suffering from acrocyanosis, a condition in which blood vessels in the legs swell severely when standing for even a short time.
According to the presentation, following one minute of standing, the patient’s legs gradually began to swell, and as time passed, the legs became bluish. After 10 minutes, the leg was swollen and bluish enough to be clearly distinguishable with the naked eye, and the patient complained that the leg felt itchy and heavy. The symptoms disappeared 2 minutes following the patient sat down.
The patient claims that these symptoms started following being infected with the coronavirus. During treatment following the coronavirus infection, he was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). It is a syndrome in which the standing position abnormally increases the heart rate.
Dr. Sivan, a professor of recovery medicine at the University of Leeds, said, “It is a very surprising case that acromegaly cyanosis appeared as a sequela of the corona virus.
