PITTSBURGH (AP) — Chris Bassitt allowed four hits in seven innings, George Springer hit his fourth home run of the season and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 on Friday night.
Bassitt (4-2) struck out five and walked four for Toronto, which snapped a five-game losing streak. The opener had few problems with some Pirates who suddenly lost the strength with which they started the season and have lost five times.
The right-hander, who signed a three-year deal with Toronto in the offseason, earned his third win in four starts.
Springer hit a two-run homer off Rich Hill (3-3) in the fifth inning for Toronto. Whit Merrifield added two hits for the Blue Jays, who bounced back from a fateful visit to Boston in which they allowed 32 runs and were swept in four games.
Toronto attacked Pittsburgh early and relied on the work of Bassitt and two relievers.
The Pirates began the day as the leaders of the National League Central. However, they were swept in their three game series at home by the fiery Tampa Bay Rays.
For the Blue Jays, the Dominicans Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 4-1 with an RBI, Santiago Espinal 3-0 with a run scored. The Mexican Alejandro Kirk from 3-1.
For the Pirates, the Dominicans Carlos Santana 3-0, Miguel Andújar 4-0, Rodolfo Castro 2-1. The Venezuelan Tucupita Marcano from 2-1.
