Countries like ours, with such vast marine wealth, should make use of the sea, the technologies offered in relation to it in the context of a sustainable economic development. This was the important conclusion drawn in the context of the Regional Growth Conference organized by Peloponnisos newspaper at the Conference and Cultural Center of the University of Patras.

An example to be followed of good practices, friendly to the environment, is the Mayor of Astypalaia, Nikolaos Komineas, who participated in the meeting emphasizing the following: “The new model that will help to change the situation is for information to come to the local communities, which will they have the right to decide”.

How can advanced technologies be integrated into traditional industries in Greece to better protect marine ecosystems while promoting economic development?
**Interview with Giorgos Papas, President of the Economic Chamber B.D. of Peloponnese and Western Greece**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us, Mr. Papas. You highlighted the crucial role of marine ecosystems in Greece’s economy during the Regional Growth Conference. Can you elaborate on how Greece can leverage its marine wealth while ensuring sustainability?
**Giorgos Papas:** Absolutely, the sea is not just a resource; it’s the backbone of our economy. We need to adopt advanced technologies and sustainable practices that enhance both economic growth and environmental protection. This involves optimizing our fishing practices, investing in marine tourism, and developing renewable energy projects.
**Interviewer:** That sounds promising. Nikolaos Komineas, the Mayor of Astypalaia, discussed empowering local communities. How do you see their role in driving these sustainable initiatives?
**Giorgos Papas:** Local communities are vital. They possess deep knowledge of their ecosystems and can make informed decisions about sustainable practices. Our aim should be to provide them the tools and information they need, allowing them to tailor solutions best suited for their environment.
**Interviewer:** With such a focus on sustainable development, some might worry about the trade-offs. How do you respond to those who think that stricter regulations could hinder economic growth?
**Giorgos Papas:** It’s a valid concern, but the truth is that sustainable practices can stimulate economic growth. By protecting our marine ecosystems, we ensure their viability for future generations. Investing in sustainable practices can create jobs, attract tourism, and enhance our global competitiveness.
**Interviewer:** This raises a crucial question for our readers: Do you believe that the pursuit of sustainable development can coexist with economic growth, or are we destined to choose one over the other? What are your thoughts?
**Giorgos Papas:** I encourage everyone to think critically about this dual approach. It’s paramount that we find a balance that supports both our economy and the environment, and involves all stakeholders in the conversation.
