Blue and white instead of black and white: Ex-LASK fan favourite Peter Michorl has a new club

On December 3, 2023, Peter Michorl played his last Bundesliga match for LASK. It was 17 minutes in the 0-0 draw against Austria – already aware that his time with the black and whites, for whom he had been active since the summer of 2015, would have an expiration date.

The attacking midfielder, who was extremely popular with the fans, no longer fit into the system, he was sorted out and “deported” to the LASK amateurs in the spring. In the regional league he was a leading player, exemplary in his commitment and in his dealings with younger players. His contract expired at the end of June, and the job search was in full swing.

Now Michorl has found what he was looking for. A return to Wiener Austria was on the table, but seemed impossible for financial reasons. The name Michorl was also mentioned at Wolfsberger AC with coach Didi Kühbauer, under whom Michorl was still a fixture at LASK. Thomas Goiginger and Felix Luckeneder were also highly regarded in Carinthia.

Ultimately, none of the three ended up in Lavanttal. Goiginger opted for Blau-Weiß Linz, Luckeneder for SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the third German league – and Michorl also opted for a move abroad.

The Vienna native is moving to Greece on a free transfer, more specifically to Atromitos Athens in the Super League 1. The contract runs until June 30, 2026. What awaits the 29-year-old there? For example, the Stadio Peristeriou, which has a capacity of 9,050 spectators, or the club colors. Michorl is swapping black and white for blue and white.

Last season, coach Damir Canadi’s former club finished in eleventh place. There are twelve legionnaires in the squad, whose market value is 8.28 million euros. The stars of the team are the Swedish central defender Franz Brorsson (750,000 euros) and the Egyptian left winger Amr Varda (700,000 euros).

In the Greek league, Michorl, who starts the season on August 18 with a home game against Aris Saloniki, will meet old acquaintances. Former Rapid players Stefan Schwab and Thomas Murg are involved with defending champion PAOK Saloniki.
