Türkiye has applied to join the BRICS, Bloomberg reports, citing sources familiar with the situation.
The agency says Ankara is seeking to strengthen its global influence and forge new ties beyond its traditional Western allies. According to the sources, the vision of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration is that “the geopolitical centre of gravity is shifting away from developed economies.”
Turkey’s application was reportedly submitted months ago due to the country’s lack of progress in joining the European Union. Moreover, sources noted that the interest in BRICS is the result of Ankara’s disagreements with several NATO countries following its close relationship with Russia after the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
According to sources, the enlargement of BRICS could be discussed during the summit to be held in Kazan, Russia, in October. Malaysia, Thailand and Azerbaijan are among the countries that wish to join.
Initially composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the bloc accepted new members on January 1, when Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joined.
