Whether U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan has received much attention from all walks of life.Recap Pelosi’s Twitter
(Wang Qiuyan/Comprehensive Foreign Report) Whether the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Pelosi came to Taiwan for a visit has attracted much attention from all parties. On the eve of the phone call between US President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the US media Bloomberg quoted sources as saying that Pelosi was in the office. In the planned itinerary, Taiwan has not been seen, and it is confirmed that he will visit Japan, Indonesia and Singapore.
US Republican Congressman Michael McCaul, the top member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, revealed to NBC News on the 27th that Nancy Pelosi invited a congressman including him to visit Taiwan together. American politicians have publicly confirmed that Pelosi plans to visit Taiwan. McCall, however, said he had turned down Pelosi’s invitation because he had to deal with personal matters.
U.S. President Joe Biden and the U.S. military have successively expressed their opposition to Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a stern warning. There is even more speculation that Biden and Xi will discuss whether Pelosi will visit Taiwan on the phone.
However, Bloomberg reported that Pelosi has arranged a trip to Asia, which will visit Japan, Indonesia and Singapore, and Malaysia may be one of the stops. Japanese media reported that the Kishida government and the Liberal Democratic Party will hold an interim parliament from August 3 to 5, during which a speech in memory of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is scheduled to be held. Pelosi is considering visiting Japan at that time for the speech.
Pelosi has so far declined to discuss the itinerary, citing security concerns, and Washington would not confirm plans for a trip. If Pelosi does visit Taiwan, it will be the most senior American politician to visit since 1997.
However, according to the Twitter feed of China’s South China Sea Strategic Probing Initiative, the US aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its strike group, including a missile destroyer Higgins USS Higgins DDG 76 and a missile cruiser USS Antietam (USS Antietam USS CG 54) and other warships have moved northeast from Singapore to the South China Sea on the 25th.
If the Reagan strike group continues to move in the same direction, it may reach the Taiwan Strait. At the same time, China is also stepping up air patrols in the region.
