Bloody Donald Trump survived assassination – the election campaign continues

Just minutes following Trump had taken the podium at the campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday night, he was hit by a bullet that went through part of one ear.

The sound of several loud bangs went through the assembly. Trump grabbed his neck and ear area with his right hand, and blood might be seen on his face and on his right ear.

Trump immediately took cover behind the lectern, and was then helped back up by Secret Service agents, who provided him with cover. He raised a clenched fist in the air, prompting cheers from the crowd. Then Trump was carried down from the podium and into a motorcade, and then taken to hospital.

The police then began the extensive task of evacuating the area.

Shot through the ear

A member of the crowd was hit by gunfire and killed. Two other audience members were also hit and sent to hospital with critical injuries.

The alleged perpetrator was shot and killed by Secret Service agents on a rooftop near the audience area where Trump held the campaign rally.

Later Saturday night, Trump was discharged. In his first statement, which he posted on Truth Social, he wrote that he was bleeding profusely and that he therefore realized what had happened.

– I was shot with a bullet that went through the upper part of my right ear, Trump wrote.

Trump offers his condolences to the family of the person killed at the campaign rally, and he thanks the Secret Service and law enforcement for acting quickly during the shooting.

Went to New Jersey

In a later statement from Trump’s campaign apparatus, it is stated that the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee will be held as planned. It starts on Monday and will last until Thursday. Trump is looking forward to participating in the national convention, says his campaign staff.

Trump was released from a local hospital later Saturday night. He then went to his estate in Bedminster, New Jersey.

In a statement shortly following 8 p.m. Saturday, regarding two hours following the attack, Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr. that he had then spoken to his father on the phone and that “he is in good shape”.

– He will never stop the fight to save America, no matter what the radical left throws at him, says Trump Jr. further in the statement.

– Attack

The FBI has taken over the investigation. The case is being investigated as an assassination attempt once morest Trump, says Special Agent Kevin Rojek at the FBI’s office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

According to CNN, which refers to sources in the FBI, the alleged perpetrator is a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania.

The FBI stated at a press conference on Saturday evening that the identity of the alleged perpetrator has not yet been made public, and that the FBI is so far unaware of the motive for the attack.

– Tonight we had what we describe as an assassination attempt once morest former President Donald Trump, Rojek said at a press conference.

The FBI added that there are no existing threats following the shooting.

Biden condemns

President Joe Biden, who was in Rehoboth Beach in Massachusetts at the time, was briefed on the drama along the way.

Later, Biden issued a brief statement saying he is praying for Trump.

– I am grateful to hear that Trump is safe and in good shape. I pray for him and his family, and for everyone who was present at the event, the statement said.

– Jill and I thank the Secret Service for bringing Trump to safety. There is no room for this type of violence in the United States. We must stand together as one nation and condemn the violence, it continued.

Shortly following, Biden held a brief press conference.

– This type of violence is disgusting and we cannot allow it, said the president.

– Trump should be able to conduct a campaign rally peacefully, without problems. We must all condemn this, Biden said.

Later in the evening, Biden spoke with Trump on the phone.

The White House says that Biden will receive another update from the justice authorities on Sunday morning.

Trump allies: Politically motivated

Biden’s election campaign apparatus decided on Saturday that all election campaign messages sent to Biden’s electorate will be paused. In addition, all television advertisements must be removed as soon as possible, in light of Saturday’s shooting attack, says a statement from Biden’s campaign staff.

Some of Trump’s Republican allies believe the attack was politically motivated, including Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, Congressman Steve Scalise and Trump’s possible vice presidential running mate JD Vance.

– The central premise of the Biden campaign apparatus is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped for all he is worth. This rhetoric is the direct cause of the assassination of Trump, says a statement from Vance.

At the same time, a number of foreign leaders have condemned the attack on Trump, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Argentine President Javier Milei, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap).

Former US presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have also done so, as have Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress.

Eyewitnesses saw a man on the roof

An eyewitness tells the BBC that he saw an armed man on a roof near the election campaign event just before the shooting and that he tried to alert the police.

– We noticed a guy crawling around on the roof of the building next to us, 15 meters away. He had a rifle. We might clearly see a rifle, says Greg Smith.

– We point at him while the police are down on the ground and running around. We were like, ‘Hey there, there’s a guy on a roof with a rifle,’ and the police didn’t know what was going on,” Smith continues.

He says he spent 3-4 minutes trying to alert the police, but he doesn’t think the police saw the gunman because of the slope of the roof the shooter was on.

– Why aren’t there Secret Service people on all the roofs around here? This is not a big place, says Smith to the channel.

– Did you see what happened to the shooter? asks the BBC reporter.

– Oh yes. They blew his head off, he says.

– They crawled onto the roof, they had their guns pointed at him, and they made sure he was dead. He was dead, and that was that. It was over, says Smith.
