Among hospitalized corona patients, those with sticky blood had a much higher mortality rate.

This is the result of analyzing the data of regarding 5,600 COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized between February 2020 and November 2021 by a research team at Icahn Medical School in Mount Sinai, USA. The study found that hospitalized patients with high blood viscosity had an approximately 60% higher risk of dying from coronavirus complications. Also, patients with high blood viscosity in small blood vessels had an approximately 32% higher risk of dying from complications.

“Coronavirus increases the risk of clots (blood clots) in people with sticky blood,” said Professor Robert Rosensen (cardiac metabolic disorder), the study’s lead author. It was a large-scale study of The results of this study will help determine the best course of treatment for patients at risk, such as corona infection, and improve outcomes, he added.

The researchers said that blood thinners may be considered when treating corona patients with high arterial blood viscosity, and that more fluids or higher doses of steroids to reduce inflammation may be helpful. The research team is also investigating the effectiveness of heparin treatment to reduce the risk of complications from acute coronavirus infection, which they hope might be of great help to people with high blood viscosity. The results of this study were published in the ≪Journal of the American College of Cardiology≫ and introduced by the US health media ‘Health Day’.
