Unapproved smart watches for monitoring blood sugar levels may pose “serious risks” to the health of people with diabetes, Health Canada warned on Wednesday.

These objects would be put on sale on web platforms and social media, while the safety and effectiveness of these instruments have not been evaluated by the competent authorities, the federal agency was alarmed in a press release.

Blood sugar monitoring watches that are not approved by authorities may pose serious health risks to consumers, who should absolutely not use them.

Because these objects “may give false blood sugar values or fail to issue a timely alert, which would have the effect of leading to errors in the management of diabetes,” Health Canada said in a press release on Wednesday.

According to Health Canada, if an incorrect measurement of blood sugar is used as part of diabetes treatment or if an alert is not issued in time, this can lead to serious errors which are not without consequences on the user health.

“These serious errors can lead to health problems requiring medical treatment, such as hyperglycemic emergencies, severe hypoglycemia, loss of consciousness, seizures, coma and death,” the federal agency added.
