Blood pressure monitoring could come to Apple Watch in 2024

A new (and extensive) report from Bloomberg today revealed some of the main ambitions of Apple to your primary wearable device: the Apple Watch. Some of these ideas were already floating around the offices of the Cupertino giant long before the watch was presented in 2014, although several of them have not become reality to this day.

Those who closely followed the first year of the Apple Watch’s life remember how, in the beginning, Apple seemed to give much more importance to the watch’s notification capabilities than to its health features — something that, nowadays, is undoubtedly the main focus of the product. According to sources heard by the vehicle, however, this only happened due to a lack of time to improve the watch’s sensors before the launch of its first generation, like the heart rate.

In other words, the limitations of its first generation ended up forcing Apple to pay more attention, at first, to other features of the watch, which was even positioned as a fashion and luxury item at times (who remembers of the infamous gold Apple Watch Edition? ????). The company’s idea, however, would always have been to transform it into a kind of “pulse office”, capable of monitoring a variety of aspects of our health.

Not surprisingly, according to the report, Apple even founded an ultra-secret subsidiary in 2011 called Voluntarywhose sole objective was to develop a technology capable of measure blood glucose levels someway non-invasive — something that has not yet been achieved by any company. The order for this investment would have come from Maçã’s CEO himself at the time, Steve Jobsand for a long time, only Apple’s most important executives knew regarding the existence of this venture.

More specifically, Avolonte’s laboratories were just 15 minutes from Maçã’s offices, which did everything to keep the venture secret. According to Bloomberg, the subsidiary’s engineers only found out what exactly they were going to work on following they were hired. They were also prohibited from entering the Avolonte building in any clothing that might link them to Apple.

Obstacles and more obstacles

If you think that technology of this type is extremely ambitious even for today, know that Apple’s idea was to present the Apple Watch in 2014 with a non-invasive glucose monitoring feature included. Obviously, this did not happen, and challenges involving not only the development of this feature, but also regulatory issues, ended up making the company “hit the brakes” on its ambitions and follow a different path, although the idea continues to live on today within Apple. Park.

This slowdown, of course, ended up disappointing several of the company’s engineers, who were soon overcome by a feeling of unfulfilled potential. This approach was also taken to prevent future generations from being delayed by regulatory issues, as health devices often take years to be approved by state bodies.

The report, it is worth noting, also brought to light other very cool facts regarding the origins of the Apple Watch. According to people familiar with the matter, for example, Apple originally wanted the watch to also be compatible with smartphones Androidbut ended up giving up on the idea out of fear that it would affect iPhone sales.

The company’s former head of design, Jony Ive, in turn, even designed a blood pressure gauge for the watch that didn’t need to be inflated, but it was only capable of detecting more general changes, and not making more specific measurements. Other health peripherals have also entered the company’s radar, such as a scale in a more robust sleep monitoring device.

The future

If non-invasive blood glucose monitoring is still something that will take a few more years to reach the Apple Watch, other long-awaited features, such as blood pressure monitoringmight very well make their debut already next yearat least according to journalist Mark Gurmanalso from Bloomberg.

According to the information, Apple would be developing two versions of its blood pressure monitoring technology. The first, expected to land on the Apple Watch in 2024, would be able to detect whether the user’s blood pressure is tending to increase and offer a report on what happened in a moment of hypertension. To avoid an inaccurate diagnosis, however, the tool will invite you to visit the doctor or measure your blood pressure with a dedicated device.

The second version is much more complete, in addition to being able to offer more exact numbers when measuring the diastolic pressure e systolic of the user, as well as detecting possible health conditions. The development of this version, however, is still at a very early stage, and it should take a few more years to become a reality.

Another new feature that is also expected to make its debut in 2024 is a security detection feature. sleep apnea, which will analyze patterns in the user’s sleep and breathing to detect whether or not they have this condition. If so, the watch will also invite its owner to visit a specialist.

Os AirPodsin turn, will be able to function as true hearing devices in 2024, as well as carry out a series of tests that can normally only be done in speech therapy offices.
