Formsense, a wearable technology company, recently announced a major technology partnership with an interdisciplinary team of researchers. Their common goal: to help stroke survivors be more physically active through IoT in sports and fitness.

Formsense, a wearable technology company, recently entered into a technology partnership with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to develop a breakthrough solution to help stroke survivors regain optimal mobility. Using an innovative mobile health (mHealth) system, this collaboration aims to monitor and encourage movement and physical activity in the weakened upper limb of stroke survivors.

At the heart of this solution is Formsense’s wearable sensor, which is worn like a ring on your finger. The smart sensors in this ring have the ability to provide personalized data, tailored to each individual, to encourage use of the affected limb. This individualized approach will optimize post-stroke rehabilitation and promote faster and more complete recovery.

The interdisciplinary team, led by Professor Sunghoon Ivan Lee of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, secured a five-year, $2.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support this ambitious project. Team members, including Paolo Bonato and Randi Black-Schaffer from Harvard Medical School and Eun Kyoung Choe from the University of Maryland, are working closely with Formsense to develop an mHealth system using wearable sensors. The aim is to accurately measure the use of the affected limb by stroke survivors and to assess the intensity of their movements.

According to Professor Lee, many stroke survivors tend to neglect the use of the weakened limb once they return home, which can lead to long-term loss of functionality and more serious consequences. Existing wrist-worn sensors are able to detect gross arm movements, but do not capture the more detailed and subtle hand movements that are essential for accurately measuring limb use. The development of this Formsense solution aims to fill this gap and provide a complete view of patient performance in their daily environment.

Technology is constantly evolving, and this collaboration between Formsense and researchers is a significant step in improving healthcare and rehabilitation for stroke survivors.
