Bloco das Montadas is a great expectation of Carnival in Brasília

Attraction that has already brought together 60,000 people exalts the LGBTQIA+ community and holds a procession for Democracy at the Plano Piloto Bus Station

The Bloco das Montadas, which has become one of the most important in Brasília, is back for carnival following the interruption of the revelry caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, the attraction is at Setor Bancário Norte (SBN), on February 19 (Sunday), from 2 pm, with free entry. Created and produced by the collective Distrito Drag, the block features DJs, male and female singers, drag queen shows and a hairdressing championship, a typical performance of Brazilian drag culture. Still on the schedule, the collective promotes a procession for Democracy at the Plano Piloto bus station.

For the return to Carnival, Distrito Drag defined the theme “The Future is Now” for the block. For the drag queen, cultural producer and director of the collective, Mary Gambiarra, the expectation is of an audience eager for street carnival. “We want to show people that the future is now. We wait for this future, for this carnival during the two years of the pandemic. We are going to make this future happen with joy, respect for differences and valuing diversity”, she reinforces.

For the presentation of the attractions of Bloco das Montadas 2023, drag queens Raykka Rica, Victor Baliane and Pikineia were summoned. The DJ team includes Nicolas Magalhães, Tulio Bueno, Patty Peronti, Eva Maruana and Sarah Cortez. In the list of musical attractions, Aretuza Lóvi, Leila Diva Black, Paulo Amaro, TriboQ and Vanessa Apetitosa are confirmed. The drag queens Bopety, Botânika Bitch Blunt, and Medusa and the performers Irmãos Sampaio entertain the audience.

Party and defense of democracy

In addition to the festive part, in this edition the block holds a parade in defense of Democracy, which starts at the Plano Piloto Bus Station and continues in Cortejo to the SBN. Faced with recent attacks on democracy, the Drag District was motivated to adopt an even more political tone to the Bloco das Montadas. “Our tone has always been to confront LGBTphobia, racism and sexism. This year we were faced with the need to reinforce the defense of our democracy, which has been severely attacked, like the terrorist acts of January 8”, explains the producer.

Acclaim

Created and starring transformist artists, Bloco das Montadas emerged in 2018. The expectation was to gather 500 people, but 15 thousand joined the Drag District party. In 2019 and 2020, the attraction was elected, by popular vote, as the best and safest carnival block in the DF in an award held by Correio Braziliense. In these two years, the audience was 45 and 60 thousand people, respectively. Just like the Bloco das Montadas, the Carnival of Brasília grows every year and, therefore, “more support and structure is needed by the Government of the Federal District”, points out Mary Gambiarra.
