THE internet connection cut off from and to Cambodia and the Philippines was done to hinder online gambling access. The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) revealed that the majority of online gambling house (judol) operations originated from Cambodia and Davao City in the Philippines based on research and reports received.
Director of Informatics Application Control of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Teguh Arifiyadi, explained that blocking one area may only move access to another place. However, this step is expected to be a warning to local governments not to easily facilitate the creation or operation of online gambling whose market is Indonesia.
“This is just part of a small effort. We are not saying that this will be the final solution, and if asked whether it is effective or not, it is not yet visible, because it has only been two days. We are sure that this will only move, they will routinely move to other countries,” said Teguh in Central Jakarta, Friday (28/6).
In addition to moving countries, the bookie house can also mask IP, which has been predicted before. Therefore, blocking internet access to Cambodia and the Philippines is only a restriction, although the impact is not significant.
“Once once more, we play downstream. If things are still not resolved above it, there are still bookies, and there are still many operators, this problem will never be resolved. Even until the end of the world, it will not be resolved. We want to be blamed every day, that’s normal,” he said.
Teguh also stated that if the closure of internet access to Cambodia and the Philippines disrupts ministries and institutions, they can report it to the Ministry of Communication and Information.
“We will whitelist the blocked IP. So, we still prioritize that services related to business needs or foreign relations can still be easily accessed for the Cambodia and Philippines regions. However, the condition is that they must inform us so that we can do the whitelisting,” he concluded. (Z-10)
