Digital technology makes creation much faster, whether in the artistic field or in the business world. Problem: digital technologies also accelerate plagiarism, which can arise very quickly following the publication of something new. A Geneva start-up is launching a platform allowing any creation to be dated, using blockchain. The possible applications are not limited to the artistic sphere. The technology is mature, and the beginnings of case law validate this means of proof, notes an expert.

The mechanism is quite simple. Upload a photo of an object or a copy of a file to the Ur-Ip platform, add a description and you receive a certificate. The digital equivalent of a stamp attesting that the user owned this object or file at this precise moment. Concretely, the platform “creates a record on the large decentralized register that is the blockchain and this record cannot be modified or deleted”, summarizes Olivier Depierre, one of the founders of DataTech, the company behind Ur-Ip, which phonetically means “your intellectual property” in English. The date included in this recording, to the nearest second, can be used as evidence in the event of a dispute over the authorship of a work.
