The highly anticipated Web3 Oscar, a prestigious event hosted by the Blockchain for Good Alliance (BGA), celebrates blockchain projects that have real impact on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Industry leaders gathered in Bangkok to honor innovators who are shaping a sustainable future.
The event was part of the BGA’s November program, which introduced two major initiatives for global change through blockchain: the Sustainable Innovation Summit and the Web3 Oscars.
Sustainable Innovation Summit: A Social Impact Hackathon
From September 9 to November 11, 2024, the Sustainable Innovation Summit hosted a hackathon with a $100,000 prize and invited participants from around the world to develop blockchain solutions for important issues such as poverty, access to clean water and equality to develop. The summit concluded with a Demo Day at the Grand Hyatt Erawan in Bangkok, where finalists presented their projects to blockchain pioneers, investors and industry leaders and had the opportunity to receive incubation support and equity-free funding.

**Interview with BreeAnne Yek, Recipient of the Public Welfare Contribution Award at the Web3 Oscars**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us, BreeAnne! Congratulations on winning the Public Welfare Contribution Award at the Web3 Oscars. Can you share a bit about what this recognition means to you personally and professionally?
**BreeAnne Yek:** Thank you so much for having me! This award is a huge honor and validation of the work I’ve dedicated myself to in blockchain for social good. It’s fantastic to know that our initiatives in leveraging technology for public welfare are being acknowledged. Professionally, it encourages me to continue pushing for impactful solutions that address global challenges.
**Editor:** The Web3 Oscars is an exciting event celebrating blockchain projects contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. What do you think makes blockchain technology uniquely suited to contribute to these goals?
**BreeAnne Yek:** Blockchain introduces transparency, traceability, and decentralization, which are critical in tackling issues like poverty and inequality. It empowers marginalized communities by providing them access to financial services and resources. I believe it acts as a bridge that connects innovation directly with those in need.
**Editor:** At the Sustainable Innovation Summit, multiple projects competed for the Grand Social Impact Award. Are there any particular initiatives presented that you found especially inspiring?
**BreeAnne Yek:** Absolutely! EthicHub’s approach to improving access to micro-financing for farmers in developing countries stood out to me. Their model not only supports local economies but also emphasizes fair practices. Similarly, Plastic Odyssey is making remarkable strides in addressing ocean pollution through innovative recycling solutions. These projects are perfect examples of how blockchain can fuel sustainability.
**Editor:** You highlighted the importance of individual contributions within the blockchain community. How can individuals get involved and contribute to blockchain solutions for social good?
**BreeAnne Yek:** There are countless ways to engage! Individuals can participate in hackathons like those organized by the BGA, contribute skills such as development or design for non-profits, or even join existing projects focused on social impact. Education is also key; understanding blockchain’s capabilities can empower more people to utilize it for positive change.
**Editor:** Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future of blockchain in relation to sustainability and social impact?
**BreeAnne Yek:** I’m optimistic about the growing awareness of blockchain’s potential to facilitate sustainability. My hope is that we will see more cross-industry collaborations that leverage blockchain to create scalable solutions. As we continue this journey, the ultimate goal is to make technology more inclusive and beneficial for everyone.
