MEXICO CITY.- The Blocking of the Mexico-Puebla highwaybuilt by ejidatarios, has already been in place for 52 hours.
Hundreds of vehicles and their drivers remain stranded on the federal highway.
This is due to a protest that is also causing millions in losses to transporters and companies in various fields.
Blockade on the Mexico-Puebla highway causes losses of 4 billion pesos
The Mexican industrial sector estimates that, until this Thursday, the blockade of the Mexico-Puebla highway and the North Arc has left losses of 4 billion pesos, reports Forbes.
This is because the blocked road is a central axis for supply chains and goods as well as for the mobility of citizens.
The Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) said the blockade has long-term consequences for the country’s economy and competitiveness.
“These types of actions compromise the rule of law and economic stability, driving away investments and affecting job creation,” the statement said.
The Confederation of Industrial Chambers (Concamin) and the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) called on the federal government to resolve the blockade.
Concamin demanded the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to ensure the safety of transporters and citizens stranded at the blockades.
“It is imperative to ensure that the necessary measures are taken to guarantee the safety and well-being of citizens and transporters affected by this situation,” the agency said.
The president of Concamin, Alejandro Malagonmade a “strong call” to the federal authorities “to engage in constructive dialogue with the dissatisfied groups that are blocking the highway.”
Canacar also joined the demand AMLO to end the blockade, which has lasted more than 48 hours.
“Authorities are urged to find an immediate solution to put an end to the more than 24-hour blockade carried out by ejidatarios,” he stressed.
A lane of the Mexico-Puebla highway opens
Since 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6, a group of 300 residents of the municipality of Saint Rita Tlahuapan They have blocked the Mexico-Puebla highway and alternate routes, the Arco Norte and the Tlaxco-Tejocotal highway.
On Thursday morning, transporters who have been stranded since Tuesday confronted the farmers during a press conference at the site.
The transporters expressed their support for the government’s demands, but asked for consideration from motorists.
Despite the shouting and pushing, the operators managed to talk to the farmers and agree to reopen the road.
“The approach with our colleagues has to do with empathy with society, and we want to show this. For us, the important thing, the fundamental thing, is dialogue,” said Jorge Portilla Alba, advisor to the protesting ejidatarios.
One lane of the Mexico-Puebla highway was opened for two hours thanks to dialogue between operators and residents.
The road was closed again in both directions around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, reported Federal Roads and Bridges (Capufe).
Why did they close the Mexico-Puebla highway?
The ejidatarios demand payment for their expropriated lands for the construction of the now blocked road and the reservation of the Iztaccihuatl–Popocatepetl National Park.
The Mexico-Puebla highway was inaugurated on May 5, 1962, in commemoration of the Battle of Puebla.
“This road was built in 1950 and it’s been 66 years, several six-year terms, PAN, PRI and Morena cut from the same cloth because they don’t provide a solution,” accused an ejidatario yesterday.
The conflict began in 1995 when the federal government, through the Ministry of Communications and Transportation, made an agreement with the ejidal commissioner of Santa Rita Tlahuapan.
The agreement was for an advance payment for the occupation of surface for an amount, then, of 1 million 99 thousand 263 pesos.
The lawyer of the ejidatarios, Jorge Portilla Albasaid that “the ejido received an advance payment from the ejido commissioner on duty.”
“Following the assembly’s instructions, the funds were distributed to several ejidatarios,” except for a minority group that did not receive money, who are the current protesters,” explained the lawyer.

AMLO’s negotiations with ejidatarios
In the ‘morning’ conference Yesterday, Wednesday, President López Obrador assured that if the blockade continued there would be no agreement with the ejidatarios.
The president said that an “opportunistic lawyer” is manipulating the ejidatarios to maintain a blockade so that he can take advantage of it.
“There is a lawyer behind this who is trying to take advantage of these very opportunistic lawyers,” he said.
AMLO He asked the farmers to lift the blockade because “they are harming many people by blocking the road.”
In the ‘morning’ today, He assured that his government is willing to pay compensation to the ejidatarios, but taking into account the official appraisals.
However, he said he will not give in to blackmail from lawyers who “are manipulating farmers.”
“The payment is partial, we are seeking a legal solution and telling the farmers to help and not let themselves be manipulated because it affects many people who cannot travel,” he reiterated.
