Battlegrounds Season 5 is coming! The champions of Azeroth gather to compete in a thrilling gladiator-themed tournament, hoping to curry favor with the Titans and their guardians. Starting with Update 27.2, the Battlegrounds mode is transformed into an arena worthy of the gods… but with the all-new Anomalies system, the competition promises to be chaotic! Is this just another test for the champions of Azeroth, or is some sinister design at work?
New Gameplay System: Anomalies
Anomalies are new game rules that affect the entire lobby throughout the game.* When the system is deployed, there will be around twenty of them. Following the initial launch, other anomalies will be added in order to weekly (new anomalies have a higher spawn rate in their first week). In total, there will be more than fifty!
These variations of the rules have a considerable influence on the unfolding of the game, from the beginning to the end. Thus, each part is truly unique. Weekly Anomaly updates will ensure constant meta renewal throughout the season! Any bugs in Update 27.2, along with additional information, will be revealed soon. In the meantime, we present three to you today:
Wait a minute… level 7?!
*The anomaly is randomly selected at the start of the game, before the hero or heroine is chosen. The same anomaly applies to all the players in the living room. The selected anomaly is known to the players when choosing the hero or heroine. Certain minions, minion types, heroes, and heroines are excluded when certain anomalies are active, to prevent unwanted interaction.
New level 7 minions
This season, Battlegrounds mode is taken to the next level! Level 7 will be available to everyone in games where the Secrets of Norgannon anomaly is active. If level 7 is thus active, it can be accessed the same way as other levels (i.e. by upgrading the tavern, obtaining triples, via Patient Scout, etc.). Level 7 minions are even more powerful than their level 6 counterparts. You’ll recognize some of them, while others are completely new!
In total, there will be 14 different level 7 minions. The others will be revealed in the Patch 27.2 patch notes. The Secrets of Norgannon anomaly has a spawn rate five times higher than normal, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore the possibilities offered by this new level!
New Hero: Thorim, Lord of Storms
The Golganneth keeper loves a challenge, so he decided to take to the arena in person to give his champion a boost. At the start of the game, you choose a promising level 7 minion who becomes your champion. After a few turns, your champion has the honor of joining your warband. With such an ally at your side, you will be a level above your opponents… literally!
If the Secrets of Norgannon anomaly is not active, then level 7 cannot be accessed (cannot get a triple of that level or otherwise spawn a minion under it) except for Thorim, who can get a one and only level 7 servant thanks to his heroic power.
Major minion shake-up
Besides adding the new level 7 minions, we are also changing levels 1 to 6 in depth. Thus, 49 minions are removed from the list, 32 new ones appear, and 12 old ones sign their big comeback! These new minions will be unveiled in the coming days.

Updated Battlegrounds Route
August 22 will mark the end of Season 4 of Battlegrounds mode and the start of Season 5. On that date, players will start earning rewards from the new Season 5 Battlegrounds course. from the Season 4 Battlegrounds route obtained but not collected will be delivered to you automatically.
The Season 5 Battlegrounds course includes Gladiator-themed cosmetics. Get the season ticket and immediately receive 2 additional hero or heroine options at the start of each game. Then, progress through the course to get the legendary Thunder Crash strike, 18 additional heroic skins, a new bartender, and more!

Battlegrounds Mode Preview Event
On August 21, the day before the update rolls out, players around the world will take part in a special live preview event and test out what’s new in Battlegrounds Season 5. Participants will be live on their respective channels, where their viewers can win seasonal tickets, so be there! Here is the list of participants:
