Blinken: Russia must reach the moment when it is ready for constructive negotiations

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken believes that Russia should get to the point where it is ready for “constructive talks.” So he answered the question of journalists from the Funke media group regarding the possibility of peace talks between Moscow and Kiev.

“Russia must get to the point where it is ready to enter into constructive negotiations,” said Mr Blinken (translation TASS). In his opinion, the goal of the negotiations should be “a just and lasting peace.”

The US Secretary of State understands that the idea of a ceasefire may be “tempting” for some. “But if this is tantamount to the actual ratification of Russia’s seizure of a significant Ukrainian territory, this will not be a just and lasting peace,” he said. The head of the State Department suggests that in the event of such an agreement, “Russia might regroup its troops and attack once more following a while.”

Russian-Ukrainian negotiations were suspended in the spring of 2022. The last face-to-face meeting of the delegations took place in Istanbul on March 29. After Russia annexed the Donetsk, Luhansk people’s republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions at the end of September 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced his refusal to negotiate with Russia while Vladimir Putin is its president. Subsequently, he allowed negotiations with a number of conditions, including the withdrawal of Russian troops. Mr. Putin declared Moscow’s readiness for a politico-diplomatic settlement of the conflict in Ukraine “taking into account the prevailing geopolitical realities.”
