Blinken arrives in Egypt from Tel Aviv ahead of Gaza negotiations

Egypt – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Egypt on Tuesday from Israel, ahead of crucial negotiations expected in Cairo before the end of the week to discuss a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Qahirah News Channel reported that Blinken had arrived in Egypt, and broadcast live the moment his plane landed in the New Alamein City in the north of the country.

She said: “US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived today, Tuesday, in the new city of El Alamein, located in northern Egypt, as part of a tour of the Middle East, centered around a new effort to reach a truce and a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.”

The channel pointed out that “before his arrival in Egypt, he was visiting Israel as part of his tour of the Middle East to discuss the truce file and stop the war that has been going on in Gaza for more than 11 months.”

On Monday, Blinken said in a press conference in Tel Aviv, where he arrived on Sunday, that he would visit Qatar and Egypt on Tuesday, to “continue efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and recover Israeli prisoners from the Strip.”

He added that Egypt and Qatar are “key partners in this effort to reach a ceasefire agreement, return the hostages to their homes, and put everyone on a better path toward lasting peace and security.”

On Monday, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a press conference that senior officials will meet in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, “before the end of the week” in order to reach an agreement to cease fire in Gaza.

Negotiations took place between Israel and Hamas on August 15 and 16 in the Qatari capital, Doha, with the aim of exchanging prisoners and reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

It was later announced that the two sides would continue ceasefire negotiations next week in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
