“Blind Comparison of Samsung S23 Ultra vs Huawei P60 Pro: Which Smartphone Takes Better Photos?”

Hello.

I really wanted to compare the two flagships in terms of image quality, since in absentia Huawei fans consider the P60 Pro the best camera on the planet, and I always like the very best. Moreover, my main camera is the Galaxy S23 Ultra, I really like the quality of photos on this device. Therefore, I pushed two smartphones head-on to evaluate how each would cope with typical scenes from life. And I was not disappointed, some pictures were rated approximately the same, there were three pairs of them. But still, using different modules in the cameras, it turned out to show the differences in the quality of shooting. Let me remind you that the S23 Ultra has more camera modules, so the telephoto gives x3 and x10 optical zoom, while Huawei only x3.5, the x10 zoom is digital and obviously loses because of this. The resolution of the main module on Huawei is 48 megapixels (f / 1.4-4.0), the module looks at least curious in terms of its characteristics. At the same time, Samsung has a 200-megapixel sensor, the first of its kind, and it will be used in flagships for a couple more years.

The blind test gave me an unexpected result, in absentia I thought that Huawei would perform stronger in many situations. I’ll make a reservation right away that the entire shooting was in automatic mode, with default settings, nothing changed. Let’s look at each frame and evaluate it.

1. Sculpture in the snow

White balance, background work – all this is on the side of Ultra, the pictures vary too much in quality, everything is obvious here. The total advantage is on the side of Samsung.

2. Pine

It is easy to recognize a picture from Samsung, it does not have a blurred background, there are a lot of details. But many people like the blur in the picture, its softness, so they chose Huawei. My personal choice is how the shot looks on Samsung. The reason for this is that you can easily get a picture like on Huawei in the editor, but Huawei simply cannot take it the same way as Ultra.

3. House in the forest

White balance again, one shot is lively, the second looks under-rotated. Ultra wins.

4. Herbarium on glass

Both devices coped with this picture plus or minus the same, a meager advantage for Samsung.

5 Straw Animals

And again the story with the white balance, it is noticeably better in Samsung, but the image scores make them about equal, although in the end the Ultra wins.

6. Portrait

The front camera on Huawei shoots more interestingly, so the victory is well-deserved.

7. A piece of the sky from the mine

The shot from the P60 Pro is more detailed, the walls of the mine are worked out in it, although the sky is heavily lightened. I love this shot and so do you, Huawei wins.

8. Idol with a scarf

Wooden idol, the sun is shining, it tints it in warm colors. Huawei has none of this, the picture looks cold, it does not match what my eyes see. Win for Ultra.

9. Girl against the wall

The field of view of the cameras is different, so the picture from Huawei looks better in advance, the girl is closer (and she’s also smiling!). But they didn’t cheat in any way, approaching, zooming in on the picture, and so on. Win for Huawei.

10. A piece of mountain and sky

Many people liked the contrast of the picture from Huawei, the greens are darker, the rocks are cast in yellow. That’s just fresh, just appeared greenery that rings (in real life, a shot from Samsung is closer to what the eyes see). But regardless of this voice left Huawei.

11. Clouds and gorge

Samsung wins by a small margin, although the pictures plus or minus are the same in perception.

12. Shadows in the source

For some reason, Huawei darkens the picture, here it is clearly visible. Winning on the side of Samsung.

13. Tower in the distance

The sky, grass, pebbles in the riverbed – all this is more noticeable on Samsung, here the choice is obvious. And you confirmed it.

14. The tower is closer

We use the telephoto modules to see how they cope with the tower. Exactly the same situation, the color reproduction is better on Samsung, the picture is lively.

15. Tower with maximum approximation

And Samsung wins again, which, however, is explained by the fact that there is an optical zoom x10, but most importantly, excellent color reproduction is still preserved.

16. Mosque

And again, the incorrect operation of automation on Huawei, the picture is dark, it looks noticeably worse.

17. Shadow in the cave

Here, on the contrary, Huawei wins, automation worked better.

18. Bright building at night

The pictures are very close, a little more votes went to Ultra.

19. Butterfly on a branch

Color rendition, the absence of artifacts in the picture (colored dots on the left) – all this speaks in favor of the picture on Samsung. He’s better crafted.

20. Butterfly on a branch close-up

The same story, the x10 optical zoom on Samsung decides the issue unambiguously in favor of the Ultra.

Impression

On the screen of phones, due to the difference in displays, image display settings, Samsung shots on the S23 Ultra look brighter and livelier. But we compared it on other devices, including computers, where this moment cannot be taken into account. And the comparison turned out to be interesting – 14 wins for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, 6 for the Huawei P60 Pro.

If we leave the pictures only from the main module (remove the front camera, optical and digital zoom), then we get a different ratio for 16 shots – five shots in the first place from Huawei, eleven shots from Samsung. Here, too, the difference is not in favor of Huawei, the advantage is too large.

In a few weeks I took about a thousand photos on Huawei, I can say that the automation does not always work well – it misses the aperture (it adjusts automatically), often the frames are darker than you can expect from them. The white balance fluctuates a lot, and the lack of a bright screen does not allow you to manually adjust the final result, tweak the exposure. I don’t like image processing, it often suffers from artifacts that come out in difficult shooting conditions (remember the shot with a butterfly).

The module from Huawei can compete well with similar models, for example, the Galaxy S23 / S23 +, where the camera is 50 megapixels and matches that of the Fold4. We had a comparison of Mate X3 and Fold4 where Mate came out ahead. But modules from Huawei noticeably lose to S23 Ultra, these are just different levels of shooting and camera capabilities. Which was proved by this blind comparison, where there were pictures of different types.
