Austria loses one of the most dedicated historians

Vienna (OTS) Austrian contemporary history research and the public mourns the loss of Heidemarie Uhl, a committed and renowned historian and also an actor and activist in the field of commemoration politics, who died far too early at the age of 66.

Her research focused on the topics of memory culture and memory politics. “We often didn’t agree on how commemoration policy should be implemented, in what form the transfer of knowledge regarding National Socialism, anti-Semitism and the post-National Socialist history in the Second Republic should take place. However, we have always agreed that both must take place, more intensively, with more money, with more staff and in different, indeed all, areas of society. We were always allies there,” says the historian and memorial policy spokeswoman for the Greens, Eva Blimlinger, dismayed by Heidemarie Uhl’s early death.

With her research and diverse journalistic activities, Uhl has made a significant contribution to raising public awareness of National Socialism and anti-Semitism, to making it clear to them that commemoration must never end.

Most recently, Heidemarie Uhl did research at the Institute for Cultural Studies and Theater History of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and headed the newly created focus on anti-Semitism research. She was a member of numerous advisory boards and commissions such as the Austrian Delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) or the Advisory Board for the Erection of Memorials and Memorials by the City of Vienna. She taught at the universities of Vienna and Graz, among others.

“My deepest sympathy goes to her family and relatives, to her friends, but also to the many colleagues with whom she has worked as an excellent team worker over the decades,” says Blimlinger.
