Amendment to higher education law sent for review

Vienna (OTS) – There is now an amendment proposal for a reform of teacher training, which will be sent for a six-week review. The aim is to improve the training for young teachers, which ultimately benefits the students. What is being done? The duration of the training will be shortened, the practical components in conjunction with theory and reflection will be expanded and the possibility of innovative subject bundles during the course of study will be created. “The package is primarily intended to improve the compatibility of study and work. It is important that young teachers are well supported and relieved during the phase of starting their career. So that they can use their training well in everyday teaching with the children,” comments Sibylle Hamann, education spokeswoman for the Green Party, a key part of the reform.

Now, in the next few years, the curricula for teacher training courses will have to be redeveloped and aligned with the future: “In the future, for example, there will be basic training in ‘inclusive pedagogy’ and ‘German as a second language’ for all teachers. These two areas can also be chosen as a focus. We would be pleased to offer innovative subject bundles. How about biology, music and history? We need motivated and well-trained educators from primary school through all schools up to the Matura. The universities and colleges of education are doing an excellent job and will adapt the curricula to the future-oriented changes in the next few years,” says Eva Blimlinger, science spokeswoman for the Green Party, summarizing the improvements in studies.

“We are pleased about numerous statements and active participation in the parliamentary process. This is an essential part of democracy. Maybe there will also be an opportunity to develop such statements in class with the students,” conclude Blimlinger and Hamann.
