Director, actor and academic, Dr. Tamer Al-Arbeed, director of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus, who presented many performances for the National Theater in Damascus, before devoting himself to academic work, confirmed in an interview with “Al-Bayan” that “the father of arts” can be a haven and a space for creativity, And self-expression, pointing out in this context that the qualitative initiatives and theatrical renaissance taking place in the United Arab Emirates call for optimism regarding the upgrading of Arab theater to distinguished levels, as it comes in the context of a real project to build a community theatrical state. You presented many distinguished theatrical works in previous periods, and you are now in the field of academic work, so did the latter steal you from the lights of the stage?
There is no doubt that academic work has its nature, interests, and privacy, and at the same time, IMDb, I cannot say that academic work completely took me away from theatrical work, but certainly, academic work requires a lot of dedication and time; This is what makes spaces narrow for the opportunity to present a theatrical work, meaning a full-fledged audience show, but it certainly did not take me away from the theater.
Syrian theater, how do you see it now? What is the impact of the Syrian crisis on it? What are the requirements to return to what it was?
It is certain that the Syrian theater is part of a general state of theater, both Arab and international. In addition, the Syrian theater, as a result of the crisis and the repercussions of the war, must be affected, as it is linked to life, the suffering of people, their pains, and their issues. Thus, many of the effects of the crisis must be reflected in the reality of the “father of arts”, but let me say something less, which is remarkable, that the Syrian theater has not stopped presenting its performances.
How do you assess the reality of the Arab playwright, in light of the power of television and other platforms, not to mention the means of communication?
I believe that forums and festivals are still the only space through which we can judge the reality of the Arab theater, and there is no doubt that there are new experiences that deserve attention.
How do you see theater in the UAE?
I follow the theater in the Emirates, what the Dubai National Theater presents, and theatrical groups in the country. This interest and this studied work attracted me, as I had the honor of attending many forums. There is a clear interest in youth, school theater, children’s theater, puppet theater, and there are important results, and this bodes well and calls for optimism and the advancement of Arab theater to distinct levels.
As for the professional theater in the Emirates, I witnessed some festivals and performances, in which I saw an excellent and promising situation at the level of the writer, the text, and the directorial vision.
Can it be said that the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts has become a starting point for the work of graduates in television drama, after the doors of the theater have narrowed in front of them as a result of several considerations, the foremost of which may be the financial aspect?
In talking about this aspect, we must stop at the importance of this creative institution, as we are talking about 47 years of academic work, which is the age of this edifice, and its role in supporting the artistic movement, whether in theatre, television drama, or even cinema, by counting it as one of the The most important representative preparation academies in the East.
There is no doubt that we are keen to keep this place as a creative laboratory that prepares graduates who prove day after day their competence and the importance of the Syrian school in theatre.
