Blatter was presented with three opposition candidates

Zurich.- This Monday vThe deadline for submitting the lists has passed and now the electoral commission of the organization will evaluate whether Luis Figo, Ali bin Al Hussein and Michael Van Praag meet the requirements to dispute the top throne with Joseph Blatter on May 29.

FIFA’s electoral commission announced on Monday that it had received four candidacies for the elections for its presidency scheduled for May 29 and will now “evaluate” them.

The candidates are Joseph Blatter, the current president and the favourite, former Portuguese international Luis Figo, Jordanian Prince Ali bin Al Hussein – one of FIFA’s vice-presidents – and Michael van Praag, president of the Dutch Federation.

The FIFA electoral commission will have to validate within 10 days the candidacies that were deposited before Thursday at 8 p.m. (Argentine time).

Applicants must have played an active role in football governance, either nationally or internationally, for two of the previous five years, and be sponsored by at least five of FIFA’s 209 member federations.

Controversy with Figo
The 2000 Ballon d’Or winner has said, in response to complaints from some of his rivals, that he has the support of six national federations to run for the FIFA presidency, which requires the support of five countries to be a candidate for the post.

“I am pleased to confirm that my six sponsors have been submitted to FIFA this week ahead of the deadline,” the former Barcelona and Real Madrid star said on Twitter.

Hours after the Portuguese’s announcement, another of the candidates, the Jordanian prince Ali bin Al Hussein, 39 years old and vice president of FIFA, also announced that he had received the endorsements.

“I am honoured to have received the endorsements that allow me to enter the race for the FIFA presidency,” he wrote on AliforFifa.

Joseph Blatter, 78, who has been in charge of the international federation since 1998, is the big favourite to win.

Michael Van Praag, 67, president of the Dutch federation, has had no trouble meeting both criteria. He revealed his six endorsements: Belgium, Sweden, Scotland, Romania, the Faroe Islands and the Netherlands.
