More than a month ago, the “White Paper Movement” of anti-blockade demonstrations broke out in many places in the mainland due to the fire in Urumqi, Xinjiang. The central government changed its mind, abandoned the zero-clearing policy, and opened up to the outside world. However, some foreign media reported that the mainland government quietly settled accounts and rounded up the demonstrators, believing them to be the instigators of social unrest.
The “Wall Street Journal” broke the news at the beginning of the month. When President Xi Jinping met with European Council President Charles Michel in early December last year, he said that the demonstrators were “mainly students and teenagers.” feel depressed. Xi Jinping also said in his New Year’s message that it is “normal” for 1.4 billion people to have different opinions, adding that “the most important thing is to reach a consensus through communication and consultation.” However, “Bloomberg” revealed that the mainland government secretly arrested demonstrators who participated in the beard movement.
“Bloomberg” quoted Chinese human rights website “Rights Protection NetworkAccording to reports, as many as 100 anti-blockade protesters were arrested. According to the agency’s December report, the temporarily confirmed detainees are from Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, and Chengdu. Their names include Huang Hao, Fat Tiger (net name), Yang Zijing, Chen Dali, Xiao Liang, and Li Yi. , Wang Xiaoyu and others.
Born in the 1980s, Huang Hao, a trainee lawyer in Chengdu, Sichuan, and the wife of an Internet “fat tiger” responded to the “blank paper demonstration” in Chengdu on the evening of November 27. They were later taken away from their residence for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” The family members learned that “Fat Hu” was being held in the Shuangliu Detention Center in Chengdu, while her husband’s whereregardings were unknown.
At least a dozen people, most in their 20s and recently starting their careers, have been detained, a person familiar with the matter confirmed to Bloomberg. Some graduated from top educational institutions, including Tsinghua University, Xi Jinping’s alma mater. Some work in party media, one works in a multinational accounting firm, and others are writers, photographers and artists.
Some friends of the detainees said, “I’m afraid that if the superiors want to find out the truth, more people may be arrested at the enforcement level.”
The report also pointed out that China usually does not hesitate to issue a statement to punish the instigators who cause social turmoil, but this time it is quietly acting, reflecting the embarrassing situation faced by the mainland government. Calm down may give the impression that civil disobedience is tolerated. At the same time, the authorities must be careful not to crack down too hard or further escalate tensions.
