Blancpain Expands its Bathyscaphe Collection
The Bathyscaphe model from Blancpain is the younger sister of the legendary Fifty Fathoms.
The latter appeared in 1953, created by divers for divers.
The Fifty Fathoms celebrated its 70th anniversary last year and made a remarkable (and highly desirable) comeback in 2024 under the magnificent reference 5010.
Model: Blancpain Bathyscaphe (1956)
Blancpain launched the Bathyscaphe three years later, in 1956.
This is also a scuba diving watch, but this time it was designed with the aim of offering customers a watch whose size was suitable for everyday urban wear.
Like its predecessor, the Fifty Fathoms, the Bathyscaphe would disappear from the Blancpain catalogue.
While we had to wait until 2003 and the efforts of Mark A. Hayek, Blancpain CEO, for the first to return to the forefront of the aquatic watchmaking scene, we had to wait another 10 years to see the return of the second.
Model: Blancpain Bathyscaphe titanium case (2013)
At Baselworld 2013, Blancpain first offered the Bathyscaphe in luxurious men’s versions, featuring three hands and a date window, with a 43-millimeter diameter. The watches combined steel or titanium cases with a rotating bezel equipped with a ceramic insert. The proposed references were adorned with a NATO strap or a sailcloth strap.
The Brassus manufacturer subsequently offered various versions, including flyback chronographs from 2014 and models equipped with an annual calendar in 2018.
Model: Blancpain Bathyscaphe Chronograph Flyback (Baselworld 2014)
In 2022, Blancpain unveiled the Bathyscaphe Quantième Complet Phases de Lune, a timepiece presented in a 43-millimeter-diameter titanium case housing two of the complications favored by the manufacture: a complete calendar with moon phases.
Today, the Swatch Group brand is taking these two complications and integrating them into a model whose case and bracelet are forged from ceramic.

Ceramic returns this year at Blancpain, adorning the Bathyscaphe Quantième Complet Phases de Lune, previously featured in the manufacturer’s catalogue with a titanium case and grey dial – discover it here: Bathyscaphe Complete Calendar Moon Phases Titanium Video Review.
The brand has chosen black ceramic for the 43.6 millimeter diameter case, with a thickness of 14.1 millimeters.
While these measurements may worry some people, it is advisable to try it on at the store.
Its short horns considerably reduce its visual impact, and its weight, 25% lighter than steel, makes it extremely comfortable to wear.
