(APS) – Air traffic has returned to normal at Blaise-Diagne International Airport (AIBD) in Diass (west), following the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, declares the National Aviation Agency Civil and Meteorology (ANACIM) in a press release sent to the APS.
This development concerns both the number of flights and passengers, as well as the quantity of freight transported, according to the authority responsible for Senegalese civil aviation.
”Like global air traffic, traffic at Blaise-Diagne international airport continues to grow,” first notes the statistics and studies department of the air transport department, in the press release received from ANACIM.
As a result of this return to normal in global air transport, ”for the first time since the health crisis, all air transport activities have returned to their pre-Covid-19 level”, the AIBD adds. same source.
”The first half of 2023 recorded an increase in passenger traffic of 18% compared to the same period of 2022, with 1,393,093 passengers, compared to 1,185,452, thus exceeding 2019 traffic by 19%. the period considered,” declares the same source.
As a reminder, the AIBD was inaugurated on December 7, 2017.
The Covid-19 pandemic, which plunged air transport into crisis, occurred when the airport was just entering its third year of operation.
”The quantity of freight transported in the first half of 2023 is 19,696 tonnes, compared to 18,786 tonnes in the same period of 2022, an increase of 5%. This volume of freight exceeds by 3% that handled before the health crisis, observes the statistics and studies department of the air transport department.
He reports that air transport activities (passengers and freight combined) carried out follow the same trend, with 13,725 flights recorded, compared to 12,833 flights during the first half of 2022, an increase of 7%.

”We note a very significant activity of airlines during this semester, companies under Senegalese law in particular, Air Sénégal, Transair and Arc en ciel Airlines (flights on demand). They maintain their market share observed in the first quarter, i.e. 25% of passenger traffic, 15% of freight and more than 33% of movements,” continues the same source.
Air Senegal provides most of these market shares, she specifies, explaining that “the observed growth in passenger traffic compared to the first half of 2022 is linked to the dynamism of most of the companies which operate on the platform” ‘ Diass airport.
”Foreign companies are not left out in terms of activities […] RAM (Royal Air Maroc) still remains very active and thus maintains its market shares, with growth of 45% in the number of passengers transported and 7% in the volume of freight handled compared to the first half of 2022,” indicates the communicated.
The Moroccan company accounts for 15% of passenger transport and 14% of freight provided to the AIBD by African companies.
”Compared to all companies (those in Africa, Europe, etc.), it (the RAM) occupies 8% of passenger traffic and 4% of freight traffic,” note the RAM statisticians. air transport department.
They note that Asky Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines have the same market share: 8% of intra-African competition and around 4% for the overall market – which concerns all companies – at the AIBD.
Air France ‘remains the most efficient’ of non-African airlines
The company Air Côte d’Ivoire provides 7% of African passenger traffic at Blaise-Diagne airport and 3% of all companies overall.
Mauritania Airlines is at 6%, regarding African competition, and at 3% globally.
”Kenya Airways has approximately the same volume of traffic for passengers, with market shares between African airlines of around 4%,” we read in the press release.

Air France, regarding non-African companies, “remains the most efficient”, according to statistics from the air transport department. It concentrates 22% of freight traffic – with a drop of two points – compared to the first quarter of 2023. Air France transports 9% of passengers at the AIBD.
The company SN Brussels provides 10% of freight and 7% of passenger transport.
”Next come Iberia and Turkish Airlines, whose shares are around 5% regarding passengers. TAP (a Portuguese company) loses one point and finds itself at 4% compared to the first quarter. Finally, Turkish Airlines Cargo stands out with significant traffic of 19% of the freight market, following Air France,” report the statisticians.
”As in the first quarter, Paris and Casablanca remain the cities most connected to the AIBD, both from and to destinations, which corroborates the substantial offer from companies like Air Sénégal and Air France on the Paris axis, with two, even three flights per day, and the RAM on the Casablanca axis, with two flights per day,” adds the press release.
