Finally a sign of life from one of the most consistently great rock bands of the ’00s – albeit from the archives: the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club does it without any fuss Black Tape EP accessible to the general public.
Originally without official titles, which were subsequently added by the band over time, the four songs from the 2018 EP were included as a bonus in the box set Wrong Creatures were released following they were dropped from the club’s eighth (and unfortunately still current) studio album at the last second because the crisp, feverish energy of the material, which was emphatically designed to be rocky, didn’t fit with the more elegiac direction of the long-player mothership.
Which not only makes sense – but also the powerful appearance of the pieces Black Tape EP only makes it seem more intense.
Bad Rabbit rumbles coolly with a heavy riff and Julia Shapiro turns up the chorus with an ecstatic clatter, which doesn’t rule out an almost doomy detour at a snail’s pace on the highway to the next filthy roadhouse. Bandung Hum stomps sharply, twisting the accelerator pedal to a sing-along part that leaves no question as to why Black Tape EP has anchored its components in the band’s live repertoire – everything here has to be fun on and in front of the stage without end! – before Running in the Red (Messy) rushing through red lights with Peter at the gear lever.
Only DFF (Extended) falls out of the ordinary (or is at least out of place as a closer in its effect as an ideal opener) in that the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club According to the title, the almost two minutes of the album version is stretched to the trance of almost seven minutes. In fact, the hypnotic, mystical-occult pull of the atmospherically dense shaman incantation might even continue for longer.
As a starting signal fired from the archives (so much optimism for purpose must be allowed following this unexpected quasi-return!) for the end of the trio’s longest record break to date, it fires Black Tape EP but primarily in a damn groovy way.
